You started your business to do the work you love, your calling, or “genius” work. This is the work that is specific to your strengths, the work that only you can do.
But it hasn’t worked out that way.
Barriers have crept in to keep you in the weeds.
This is true for you if you feel like you spend more time working “in” the business than “on” the business. Or like you are doing everything except your passion work.
Continuing to work with these barriers in place will stall your business’ momentum and growth, and keep you playing small as a Leader.
It took risk, grit and sacrifice to start a business in pursuit of your calling. Now, it’s time to overcome the barriers that keep you from doing what you are meant to do.
Here are 3 barriers keeping you from working in your genius, and how to overcome them.
1. You don’t ask for help
Most of you started your companies as solopreneurs, as a team of one. There is tremendous pressure in this role to feel like you have to be able to hold all the cards and do everything yourself.
You may feel like asking for help indicates failure, or shows that you are weak or incompetent. Or, you may reject the idea of getting help because you think it puts you on a pedestal as deserving of help, and you don’t want to appear more deserving than others.
Deeper yet, maybe you don’t ask for help because you believe the help you need doesn’t exist. You fear support isn’t available for you, and continue to suffer in silence.
To overcome this barrier, you don’t have to give into these fears, but you do have to accept your own limitations. Knowing yourself as a Leader, what you can do, what you can’t do and what you don’t have time to do, opens you up to see where exactly you need support.
Often, you don’t believe support exists for your situation because you don’t know exactly what you need help with, or who you need to support you.
You do deserve help, and that doesn’t make you better than others. It makes you human. By allowing others to help you, you will find people who are better than you in the areas you need help, which gives you time to do the work you are best at.
2. You want absolute control
Your business is your baby, and it’s tempting to believe that nobody will care about your baby as much as you do. Because of this, the idea of delegating makes you cringe.
It’s natural to want others to perform work with the same quality that you do. But this shouldn’t be an excuse to keep responsibilities on your plate that could be handed off to somebody else.
It takes a village to raise a baby, and it takes support to scale a business.
If you are new to delegation, don’t try to hand-off work cold-turkey. Ease out of your responsibilities slowly.
Then, replace the time you delegate with your genius work. You might realize how good it feels to do your passion work again, and find the motivation you need to delegate more.
Remember, you can’t control other people. But you can control how you communicate your expectations and parameters for success to your Executive Assistant.
Decide if you want to give your EA the freedom to create their own processes, or if they should follow yours. Just make sure you communicate these preferences early and often so everyone is on the same page.
3. You are waiting ‘until’
You can always find a reason to not take action right now. You tell yourself you are waiting “until” you have a certain amount in the bank, or “until” you have more time, or “until” you’re in your dream office space.
The excuses are endless!
“Until” is the killer of dreams because it keeps you stuck just within reach of your goals. If you never take action, you never take risks. By avoiding risk, you avoid failure.
When you fear failure, you do everything you can to stay in a safe place.
Maybe doing everything in your business is a place you feel safe, because you know if you were 100% committed to your genius work, you might have to do things that take you out of your comfort zone, and expose you to rejection.
You might have to launch a course that people would want to enroll in, or worse, that they wouldn’t.
You might have to pitch yourself as a podcast guest or as a speaker for an event and risk being heard, or rejected from the opportunity.
What dreams are you talking yourself out of? What lies are you telling yourself to keep you waiting “until?”
To overcome this barrier, you need to take action. It can be a small action, like deciding to document a process you eventually want to delegate to someone else. Or it can be a big action, like deciding to ask for help, or drafting a job notice.
You can’t wait until everything is perfect in your professional life to take action, because you will be waiting forever.
Take a small step now to see big changes later. This is the crux of gaining momentum, or forward movement, in your business to achieve scale.
You know the work you are meant to do. Now it’s time to fight for it in your business. Overcome the barriers of help, control and “until” to reclaim your genius work and move closer to your dreams.
